President Mujica’s speech made me think about Ethical fashion

このエントリーの日本語版はこちらOne big goal on my career is to be the help of Japanese apparel to go abroad.
It was my first year of career when Lehman Shock happened and I was shocked many Japanese apparel factories were actually closed or degraded the size. I love Japanese eccentric but interesting fashion culture and I would love to be someone who can appeal it to overseas. And I am trying to believe I am on the way, though it is still far.
– The world has today the material elements that it needs for people to — does it have the resources to be able to spend as much resources as the rich societies spend and use or not?
. An electric light bulb can’t last more than a thousand hours. Some of them. But there are — we could have lights that could last for longer but they would cost so much we couldn’t afford them. And so we’re in this vicious circle of the throwaway society.
We need to govern the market itself.
– Development cannot fly in the face of happiness; it should promote human happiness, love, and human relations, relationships between parents and children, friends.
Then I wondered: is my goal really increase the number of “RICH” people? I do not want them to but something no need. To sell cheap is to make cloth disposal?
I was apparel factory consultant for 3 years. I have consulted apparel factory which have orders from all over the word. I could not think about the globalization of fashion. It is hidden side of fashion; at least I did not know what kinds of environment clothing were sewed.
Obviously we can not live only with the clothing “made in japan” brand anymore. Too expensive. So we outsource in China and East south Asia. Ok , very reasonable. I found out many had no expression on the face, and have no word. It may have changed in 2 yeears since I left the consulting division, and it had happended in Japan. I was actually shocked when I first went to consulting in Japanese factory. There were many chinese who worked 16 hours a day. It was4 hours away from Tokyo but they have been Tokyo only once. Maybe they came from rural area of China.
I am happy if the clothing is cheap and good. But it sometimes mean they are made in the factories which are slightly not illegal.
Maybe I am very modern in this point of view. My mom and dad’s generation says “You can contribute to the society after you got some success”. And I understand the meaning. But for me it is cooler if you can do business good for the sustainable society. Maybe the flourishing of social business have influenced me a lot.
The solution I can think now, is Ethical fashion. Not really new concept anymore, but still attractive to me. 4 brands below are being my icon for this 5 years.
Motherhouse (Increasing the fair labor in Bangladesh)
Looking the website Ethican Fashion Japan, I found many different type of ethical fashion.
So what I can do?
I do not think only the ethical fashion brand should do something ethical, I believe whole world should go toward the way.Not finding the right answer yet…
