こんにちは！全国通訳案内士、二人の娘を含めた日米家族で年100日旅しているAmiです。
夏は毎年２ヶ月くらいアメリカなので、今年の冬は中東２カ国で過ごすことにしました。（ちなみに去年は、タイとマレーシアで１ヶ月過ごしました。）
実はドバイ、2021年の冬にも家族で3ヶ月くらい住んでいたので、私たちにとってはかなり慣れている場所。住んでいる途中に第二子の妊娠がわかり、後半は私はナニーさんに子育ても頼るほどあまり出歩けなくなってしまったこと、義父母を呼べなかったことがあり、今回はドバイを含む中東にしたのです。

１週間滞在していたグランドハイアットからは、タクシーであっという間の距離。今回は、世界最大級のショッピングリゾート「ドバイ・モール」をレポートします。
ここは総床面積が約110万㎡、店舗数は1,200以上。単なるモールというより、もはやひとつの「ラグジュアリーな街」そのものです。
伝統とブランドが交差するドバイ流ファッション
モールに一歩足を踏み入れると、アメリカから来たグランマとグランパは、その豪華さに圧倒されていました。
真っ白なカンドゥーラや漆黒のアバヤといった伝統衣装はもちろんですが、それ以外の人たちもみんな、きちんとした身なりをしています。 カジュアルなTシャツに短パンなんて人はまず見かけません。イメージで言うと、「麻布台ヒルズにいるとても上品な皆様を、さらに若くして、わかりやすいブランドものを持たせた感じ」。これだけブランドロゴが主張していても、決して下品にならずに文化として成立しているのがドバイの面白いところですね。
Diorやイヴ・サンローランのベビーカーが普通に走っていたりと、まさに別世界です。
店頭が上から下まで本物のバラで埋め尽くされているショップも珍しくなく、どこを見ても華やか。特に「魔のエリア」だったのが、子供服フロアです。カジュアルから超高級メゾンまで勢揃いしているのですが、そこでグランマが「ここで私、一日中過ごせそう……。何十万も使っちゃいそう……」とボソッと呟いていたのを、私は聞き逃しませんでした。笑
アメリカだとや逆に、お金持ちな人でもポロシャツに短パンと言うのは珍しくない、というか普通です。なので、着飾るのが普通な中東文化とは、ファッションとしてはほぼ対極なんじゃないかと私は思います。中東ではお化粧も濃いめだし、すっぴんの人とかほぼ見たことないな。
巨大水族館と、展望台スルーの選択
モール内を歩いていると突如現れるのが「ドバイ水族館」の巨大パネル。今回は中には入りませんでしたが、通路から巨大なサメやエイが泳ぐ姿を間近で見られるこのスケール感は、何度見ても圧倒されます。
実は今回、夫はブルジュ・ハリファの展望台「At the Top」に行こうかと考えていました。 世界一高いビル（828m！）の展望台には、3年前に家族3人でここに住んでいた頃に行ったことがあるのですが、今回改めて列を見ると、思いのほか長そうで……。 「それなら今は子供たちが楽しめる体験を優先しよう！」と、私たちは潔く列を離れました。
公園にルイヴィトンの忘れ物！？ドバイの驚くべき治安
モールの外に出て、ブルジュ・ハリファのすぐ横にある公園からドバイ・オペラの方までお散歩しました。そこで見たのは、公園から少し離れたところにある椅子に、なんとルイヴィトンの忘れ物がポツンと放置されている姿。いかにもドバイらしいなと。
ドバイは世界でも犯罪率が極めて低いことで知られています。その理由は、街中に張り巡らされた膨大な数の監視カメラだけではありません。
- 人口の約9割が外国人： ビザ依存して生活しているため、不法行為をすれば即刻国外追放・入国禁止という厳しいルール。
- 厳しい法執行： 警察の権限が強く、犯罪に対する抑止力が非常に高い。
- 高い生活水準： そもそも生活が安定している層が多く、治安の維持に繋がっています。
ブランド品が放置されていても盗まれないほどの安心感は、子連れ旅行には本当に心強いポイント！
新しい遊び場と、賢いフードコート利用
お散歩中、ブルジュ・ハリファの近くに新しいプレイグラウンドができているのを発見！ドバイは訪れるたびに新しいスポットが増えているので、何度来ても新しい発見があります。
食事は、住んでいた頃の経験を活かしてフードコートへ。
ドバイ・モールのフードコートは、実はレバノン料理などの現地フードがリーズナブルに食べられる穴場。本格的なフムス（ひよこ豆のペースト）やケバブなどをサクッと食べられるので、子連れにはレストランよりもずっと気楽で重宝します。
圧巻のドバイ・ファウンテン
世界最大の噴水ショー「ドバイ・ファウンテン」も楽しみました。 最大150メートルまで吹き上がる水と、光、音楽のコラボレーション。18:00から30分おきに開催される夜のショーはもちろん、お昼（13:00、13:30／金曜は13:30、14:00）の回も迫力満点です。
さて、展望台を諦めてまで私たちが向かった先は……モールの中にある￥子供たちの楽園「キッザニア・ドバイ」！ ここがまた、日本とは一味違うドバイ流の豪華な体験の連続でした。

[Dubai Family Travel] Dubai Mall: High-End Luxury and Incredible Safety
Just a short taxi ride from the Grand Hyatt I mentioned in my previous blog, we visited the world-famous Dubai Mall.
With over 1.1 million square meters of floor space and 1,200+ stores, it’s not just a mall—it’s practically a luxury city.
The “Azabudai Hills” of Dubai: Everyday Fashion
Stepping into the mall, Granma and Granpa from the US were immediately struck by the sheer elegance.
It’s not just the traditional white Kanduras and black Abayas; everyone is dressed exceptionally well. You won’t see people walking around in casual T-shirts and shorts. Imagine the elegant crowd at Tokyo’s Azabudai Hills, but younger and with even more prominent luxury brands. Even with visible logos, it doesn’t look tacky; it’s just the culture here.
Seeing Dior or Yves Saint Laurent strollers being pushed around is perfectly normal in this part of the world.
The real “danger zone” for us was the kids’ fashion floor. It features everything from casual brands to haute couture. I didn’t miss it when Granma whispered, “I could spend all day here… and easily spend hundreds of thousands of yen” w.
Giant Aquarium and Prioritizing the Kids
The massive viewing panel of the Dubai Aquarium suddenly appears as you walk through the mall. While we didn’t go inside this time, the scale of seeing sharks and rays from the hallway is breathtaking every single time.
My husband initially thought about taking us to the “At the Top” observation deck at Burj Khalifa. We visited the world’s tallest building (828m!) when we lived here as a family of three years ago, but seeing the long lines this time, we decided to pivot. “Let’s prioritize what the kids want to do right now,” we agreed, and headed for a more hands-on experience.
A Louis Vuitton Left on a Bench? Dubai’s World-Class Safety
We took a walk from the park next to Burj Khalifa towards the Dubai Opera. That’s when we saw something quintessential to Dubai: a Louis Vuitton bag left sitting all by itself on a bench. The fact that it stayed there undisturbed says everything you need to know about the safety here.
Dubai is known for one of the lowest crime rates in the world. This is due to more than just the extensive surveillance cameras:
- 90% Expats: Since most residents rely on visas, any illegal act leads to immediate deportation and a permanent ban.
- Strict Enforcement: The police have strong authority, making the deterrent for crime incredibly high.
- High Standard of Living: The general population is well-off, which naturally contributes to social stability.
The peace of mind that comes from knowing a luxury item won’t be stolen is a huge plus for anyone traveling with children.
New Playgrounds and Smart Food Court Dining
During our walk, we discovered a brand-new playground near Burj Khalifa! Dubai is constantly evolving, and there’s always something new to find every time we visit.
For lunch, we relied on our experience from living here and headed straight to the food court. It’s a hidden gem for affordable local food like Lebanese cuisine. Being able to grab fresh hummus and kebabs quickly is much easier with kids than sitting down at a formal restaurant.
The Iconic Dubai Fountain
We also caught the Dubai Fountain show—the world’s largest choreographed fountain system. Water jets shoot up to 150 meters, synchronized with light and music. The evening shows run every 30 minutes from 6:00 PM, but the afternoon shows (1:00 PM and 1:30 PM; 1:30 PM and 2:00 PM on Fridays) are just as impressive.
So, instead of the observation deck, we headed to a paradise for kids: KidZania Dubai! It turned out to be a luxurious, high-scale version of what we know in Japan.
